As a signature feature of this home renovation in Ottawa, this custom staircase represents our commitment to structural artistry. Designed and built personally by Paul Denys, it serves as the architectural spine of the Mason House in Old Ottawa East.
The staircase was recognized by the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association (GOHBA), winning the Design Award for Best Housing Detail. It balances structural integrity with a light, modern aesthetic, proving that even a functional element can be a work of art. This project is a centerpiece of our specialized architectural elements portfolio, showcasing the precision of our design-build approach.
Building the stair meant solving several challenges at once. The curve had to be framed with laminated ribs for strength, then wrapped in a smooth wooden base, while each tread was cut to a precise taper so the rhythm of the climb felt effortless. Exposed steel bolts were chosen to fasten the stringer, turning structure into ornament, and slim wood balusters with a hand-shaped rail keep the profile light enough for a narrow hall. Because the staircase had to meet building code without looking heavy, the design-build team mocked up sections in the shop before final installation. That craftsmanship is why the stair still draws visitors years later, and why it is often cited among the finest renovations Ottawa craftspeople have delivered.
