Holland House

Now you see it now you don’t

In the master bedroom of this Civic Hospital home, Denys Builds Designs turned a 14 by 12 foot room with a tiny 3 by 3 foot closet into a study in smart storage. The project began with a trade-off: the small existing closet was given up to create a linen closet in the hall, freeing us to build a 12 foot long custom closet concealed behind sleek mirror sliding doors.

The floor to ceiling, wall to wall mirrors reflect daylight from the bedroom windows, making the room feel twice its size with twice the windows. Behind the doors, the closet is fully fitted with double height hanging rods, deep drawers, open shelving for folded clothing and a dedicated shoe rack, so every item has its place. As the gallery shows, the bright, organized interior makes a striking contrast with the deep burgundy bedroom walls.

Homeowners Liz and Robert found that getting ready in the morning became noticeably easier, and the extra linen closet storage was a welcome bonus. It is a clear example of how thoughtful custom closet renovations can multiply both storage and perceived space in an older Ottawa home.
