Mc Carthy House

Reviving a Gothic Revival

This Gothic Revival (1884) house is part of the earliest efforts to establish Sweetland Avenue and systematically develop the western portion the Colonel By estate. It historical significance is derives in part being a home (1922-27) for John A. Whitcher, a supervisor with Grand Trunk Railway and a home (1939-48) for Augustin Povtin , a translator, Bureau for Translation, Secretary of State and from its role in establishing residential use on Sweetland Avenue. The porch roof structure was jack up back into place.

New front columns, railings and decking were installed along with a new colour scheme. The original door was lost to time, we fortunate to find a salvage door and hardware at an Architectural Salvage Store. We repaired, strip and painted door to its new glory.
